All records of rare and scarce species submitted to the Society are considered by the KOS Rarity Panel before being accepted for publication in the Kent Bird Report.
Species requiring supporting evidence, considered by the KOS Rarity Panel are listed below.
Records should be sent to the appropriate Area Recorder using the form that can be downloaded here. If the record is being submitted as a photograph, it would be helpful if the observer could complete this form to support the record.
Additionally, national rarities are considered by the British Bird Rarities Committee. A list of species considered by that committee, along with details on how to submit a record to the committee can be found here.
Your records are important in helping us to build a picture of the numbers and distribution of birds in Kent and help in monitoring population and breeding trends of our birds.
All records are entered on the KOS database and are used to compile the annual Kent Bird Report.
Observers are encouraged to submit their records regularly and no later than 28th February of the following year.
You can submit your records directly onto the Society’s database using the Records Submission Form. Records entered on the database will appear in the Bird News page on this site and the most recent reports of rarities and other species usual in Kent are listed on the Bird Sightings Headlines page.
Records submitted to BirdTrack or eBird will be passed on to the KOS and will become part of our annual records and archive, but cannot be displayed immediately on this website.
Alternatively, records could be saved until the new reporting facility is developed or sent to the Area Recorder using an Excel spreadsheet. The spreadsheet can be downloaded from here.
Reports of rare or scarce birds in Kent are considered by the KOS Records Panel (KOSRP) and should be supported by a description or photograph. A list of species requiring supporting evidence can be found here.
Please note that sightings posted on Facebook, Twitter and blogs are not recorded on our database and have to be submitted in one of the ways described above.

All members are welcome to join us on any of the field trips below. A good chance for experienced birders to meet other enthusiasts or visit new sites and for beginners to benefit from expert guidance. For more information on our outdoor meeting programme contact Ray O’Reilly by This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or phone on 07831 362502.
Depending on recent sightings, weather, wind direction and tide, the location of field meetings is decided two days prior to the outing. Participants can stay as long as they would like. Field Trips are always a full day.
Bring adequate clothing, boots and at times wellies. On rare occasions sun hats and sun cream. Packed lunch, flask and water are essential, as we do not stop at shops or cafes.
We will stop at available toilets when possible. We cater for both beginners and experts and have a policy of understanding what species a bird is and why. We often look at birds’ present and previous distribution. We explore erstwhile names and who birds are named after.
We enjoy ALL other wildlife including plant life and take our time at sites, not rushing around. As an item of fun we keep a daily bird list record high of 98, lowest 62.
