Today’s Field Trip started and finished with good birds around Car Parks, Shore Larks to begin with and a Short-eared Owl to finish. The weather was perfect for birding with some good light on Sheppey.

We walked up the coast from Leysdown FC to Shellness and back. Several waders were enjoyed including 80+ Avocet, Knot, Bar-tailed Godwit, Sanderling and Grey and Golden Plovers. A short seawatch gave us 16 Gannets in a variety of plumages, 2 Red-breasted Mergansers and 4 Red-throated Divers. A lone 1st CY Little Gull flying along the shoreline was somewhat unseasonal. Rock Pipit and Common/Harbour Seals were watched closely.

A lunch stop at Capel Fleet provided a small flock of Corn Buntings, Stonechats and a lovely ring-tailed Hen Harrier. The afternoon was spent at Elmley NR and 7 Cattle Egrets next to the entrance track was a good start. A Long-eared Owl was once again found roosting in the old orchard this time right out in the open. Raven and Peregrine were recorded before we watched some Brown Hares and our daily list reached 71 (no House Sparrow, Blue Tit etc). Thanks to everybody who attended.
