Hieraaetus pennatus

<Status>

2025 A pale phase bird, believed to be the same as one seen previously in Cornwall and Hampshire, toured Thanet on 10th April, and was believed to have gone to roost somewhere near Cliffsend (Pegwell). It seen again the following morning initially from Chalk Hill (Pegwell) before disappearing.
2000  A third-calendar year, pale morph bird, was observed at Dungeness on 7th April, and was seen again at Cliffe the following day. This is accepted as the same bird as seen the previous year in Ireland, Kent and Cornwall, and had been reported between times in both Somerset and Avon. It was subsequently seen again at North Ronaldsay, Orkney, in June.
1999

A second-calendar year, pale morph bird, previously present in Ireland between February and April, was observed at St Margarets-at-Cliffe on 28th September, before moving on to be re-located in Cornwall where it remained until at least mid-November.

The Kent Ornithological Society was founded in 1952

Our aims are to record and monitor the county’s bird life providing both an accurate historical record of Kent’s birds but equally importantly providing data that can be used to help protect valuable habitats from development and other threats.

In doing this, we seek increase knowledge and understanding of birds and their habitats in the county and encourage and support people seeking to take up birdwatching as a hobby.

Membership of the society is open to all and costs £15 a year. Members receive a free copy of the annual Kent Bird Report and regular electronic newsletters. See details

The Society runs regular online talks and an outdoor programme of field meetings. They are opportunities for both beginners and experienced birdwatchers to meet others in the county and to develop their knowledge and skills.
