White-rumpled Sandpiper - Frank Cackett

Waders took the headlines in an excellent week of Summer birding in Kent. An adult White-rumped Sandpiper was discovered at Oare Marshes on the 28th and stayed for the remainder of the week. There have been close to 40 records of this species in Kent, but could it be the same individual that was at Dungeness last year? Another American wader did show up at Dungeness from the 29th, a Pectoral Sandpiper was in the SE corner of the ARC.

Another good bird was the Black-crowned Night-heron that was on show from Hooker's ramp at  Dungeness RSPB the afternoon and evening of the 25th. Unfortunately it did not stick around.

Further highlights included a fly-by Stone-curlew past Oare, where the Bonaparte's Gull also continued its stay. A juvenile Purple Heron was at Worth on the 26th while a Serin was again seen at Kingsdown, could it be hanging around in the area as it was seen nearby a few times in June as well. Some early migration of song birds was notable, with a Redstart, a Whinchat, two Pied Flycatchers and two Grasshopper Warblers at Dungeness this week.

Curlew Sandpiper, Little Stint and Wood Sandpipers were once again seen at various locations. Sea-watching on the other hand was quiet.

With the two sandpipers added this week, and the Zititng Cisticola, Bonaparte's Gull and Laughing Gull  earlier in the month, the unofficial Kent year list grew to 262. Which additions will August bring?. Good luck.
