Montagu's Harrier - Barry Wright

A male Montagu's Harrier was discovered at Galloways in the Dungeness area on the morning of the 8th. It stayed in the area for most of the day, but unfortunately spent most of its time in West Sussex after the inital sighting. Another good bird, also at Dungeness, was a Roseate Tern which was roosting with Sandwich Terns on the beach off the Lifeboat Station on the 7th. As often, it only stayed briefly.

There was a distinct increase in songbird migration, especially on days of more easterly winds. Star bird was a lovely Wryneck at Langdon Hole on the 9th, while a Wood Warbler reported near Sellindge also on the 7th was also good. Over the week, there were around a dozen Pied Flycatchers seen, a few Common Redstarts and some Tree Pipits across coastal locations. Honey Buzzards flew in off the sea at Samphire Hoe and Dover, while ring-tailed Hen Harriers were seen at Dungeness, South Foreland and Dover. A group of around 50 White Storks flew west over Whitstable.

The Pectoral Sandpiper remained on show on Radar Pool, Cliffe, all week. The Bonaparte's Gull at Oare was seen again from the 11th after not being reported for about a week. Little Stints and Spotted Redshanks were at Dungeness and Cliffe.

Sea-watching remained very quiet.

Hopefully temperatures will cool down and we may even see some rain as we move further into August - might make for (even) more pleasant birding. Enjoy.
