White Stork - Mark Chidwick
There was plenty of good early autumn migration in the past week. A very impressive find was a fly-over Greater Short-toed Lark over Foundation Farm near Marden on the 11th. It was heard and seen for about 15 seconds, at an inland location no-less. This is only the 12th record for Kent of the species and the first since 2011. Hopefully the wait for a twitcheable bird won't be another 14 years. Another good migrant was a Wryneck at Walmer Beach on the 13th. There were plenty of other migrant song birds around with decent numbers of Willow Warblers, Tree Pipits, Grasshopper Warblers, Redstarts, Pied Flycatchers and Whinchats.

A very large group of White Stork, at times split into smaller groups as well, toured the county, with the highest count 82 at Seasalter on the 12th. This is the largest group on record in Kent in recent years following a succesful breeding season at the Knepp estate (18 nests produced 45 young this Spring).

Further highlights included two Quail singing in a crop field near St Margaret's at Cliffe on the 12th and 13th, an Osprey that flew over ARC, Dungeness on the 12th and several Black Tern at various locations around the county. A Ruddy Duck was reported from Stodmarsh. Two Little Stint were at Oare, while Curlew Sandpipers were seen at Elmley. Black-necked Grebes remained in the Dungeness area with two at Lade and one at Burrowes later in the week. The Bonaparte's Gull remained at Oare.
Sea-watching was very quiet, particularly considering the time of year.
The weather remains sunny and with winds moving to an easterly direction, conditions for migration seem good. Enjoy.
